2156 unidentified bodies in Kashmir: SHRC demands DNA profiling

kashmirSrinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir State Human rights Commission has demanded the DNA profiling of the 2156 unidentified bodies buried in unmarked graves in Kashmir. The division bench of the SHRC comprising chairman Justice (retd) Syed Bashiruddin and Javed Ahmad Kawoos has recommended the identification of all the bodies that were recovered from 38 places in Kashmir. The bench made six recommendations to address the issue and linked it to cases of disappearances in the State.

“The dead bodies shall be identified by all available means and techniques like DNA profiling, physical description, dental examination, finger prints, carbon dating, forensic pathology etc as may be applicable, ” they said.  Human rights groups in Kashmir claim that thousands of Kashmirirs have disappeared since 1990. The Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons argue that the majority of these disappeared have been illegally killed by security forces. Positive DNA matches with family members of missing persons may not immediately settle the debate over circumstances leading to death but they will embarrass the state and the centre.
