2G case: PM protects tainted ministers

Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj New Delhi: The BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj accused the Prime minister of having double standards. They criticized the PM of being partial and for defending Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam. According to them, the Prime Minister has on one hand displayed restraint towards his own cabinet ministers and on the other hand he has taken strict action against A Raja and other DMK leaders.

BJP spokesperson Arun Jaitley said that the Prime Minister has distanced himself from ground realities and is living in denial. “The Prime Minister says he has full confidence in Chidambaram and he will save his ministers. The Prime Minister instead of protecting tainted ministers should be seen protecting the truth. If the Prime Minister continues to protect tainted ministers, the country will lose confidence in the government,” Jaitley said.

“Chidambaram is equally liable as A Raja is, as he had full knowledge of 2G spectrum allocation. Where is the government’s commitment to fight corruption,” Sushma Swaraj said. Questioning the UPA’s policies, Swaraj said, “This is a unique coalition policy – if a coalition partner is involved then take action, but if one of their own minister is involved then save the minister.”

“The CBI has recorded the statements of Arun Shourie and Jaswant Singh, but they have a different stand on Chidambaram,” she added.

Targeting the Prime Minister for saying that the Opposition is trying to destabilize the government, Jaitley said that the destabilization within the government is due to its own doings. “We don’t even need to destabilize the government; it is collapsing under its own contradictions. There is a crisis of leadership, crisis of credibility in the government,” Jaitley said.

According to Sushma Swaraj, “If mid-term polls happen, it will be because of their own doing.”
