All party meeting on Mullaperiyar

mullaperiyar-damNew Delhi: The Kerala Water Resources PJ Joseph is convening a meeting of officials to discuss the future of  Mullaperiyar issue. This meeting comes in the wake of the Centre’s decision to play mediator in the Mullaperiyar dam dispute. However, the centre has sought written assurance from Kerala government so as to ensure that Kerala will continue to supply water to Tamil Nadu without any change in quantity and to construct a new dam in place of the old damn using the states own funds.

Union Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal assured that once Kerala does its part the Centre would convene a meeting between the Kerala and Tamil Nadu government. Kerala cabinet meeting will also be convened today to discuss the urgency in ensuring the safety of people living below the Mullaperiyar dam in view of recurring tremors in Idukki district.

The recurring tremors near the Mullaperiyar dam have raised much concern as that could lead to failure of the dam. Experts claim that there is a geological fault as close as 16 km’s to the dam. A study done by the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, showed that an earthquake of the magnitude of 6 on the Ritcher scale in the vicinity of the dam can wreck the 116 year old structure. Last Friday an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Ritcher scale had its epicentre 32 km’s away from the dam.
