Amar Singh behind bars: Cash-for-vote scam

amar-singhNew Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh has been arrested and sent to 13-day judicial custody at the Tihar Jail, with regard for his alleged involvement in the cash-for-vote scam. The Tees Hazari court of Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal rejected Amar Singh’s plea of ill-health and his interim bail application. The judge said he found the interim bail to be very similar to an ordinary bail and the date for submission of bail shall be granted only a later date.

Along with Amar Sing the other two accused, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora have also been arrested and sent to judicial custody till September 19. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora are former MPs who had waved bundles of inside the Lok Sabha along with current Lok Sabha MP Ashok Argal. Argal who is a sitting MP cannot be arrested or chagesheeted untill the Lok Sabha speaker grants permission for the same. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has already asked for permission from Lok Sabha Speaker Meira kumar to arrest Argal.

Amar Singh had earlier tried to skip court proceedings citing health reasons. Mr Khan, Amar Singhs lawyer had stated that Amar Singh had high blood pressure and faces the risk of infection after the kidney transplant he underwent last year. The court  seemed skeptical and had asked Amar Singh’s counsel to submit all his medical reports today itself. The lawyer seemed to be sure that Amar Singh would be able to walk out free only on medical grounds and not on legal grounds.
