Happy birthday Uncle Pai

Anant paiNew Delhi: Today India celebrates Uncle Pai’s 82nd birthday. Anant Pai popularly known as Uncle Pai gifted us with Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle that have been an integral part of growing up in India in the last two decades. Anat Pai who was born on September 17, 1929 at Karkala, Karnataka was the creator of “wonderland” for all children. Google saluted the entertainer with a doodle drawn in classic Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle style showing Uncle Pai, as Anant Pai as known to millions of young readers, surrounded by Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comic books.

In 1967, the educational comic series Amar Chitra Katha was launched. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualized all of these, and wrote the scenarios for most of them.  Amar Chitra Katha with its immortal captivating stories has been India’s largest selling comic series with more than 90 million copies sold in 20 Indian languages. The comic series was started by Anant Pai in an attempt to teach Indian children about their cultural heritage.

The first issue of Tinkle was launched in April 1980. Characters like Suppandi and Shikari Shambu have been immortalized by the readers. More than 500 issues have been printed so far. The magazine carries comic stories and regular columns of interest to school children.
