messiKolkatta: Lionel Messi proved his worth as the captain of the team as he took Argentina to a thrilling victory against Venezuela on Friday. Messi’s first game with the captains armband proved those wrong who have accused him of being a better player for Barcelona than Argentina.

After a goalless 1st half and after thwarting two good attempts by Messi and Gonzalo Hugain, Argentina finally gave their eager fans memories of a lifetime by a 1-0 victory over Venezuela. Even though Messi himself did not score the goal, he made a beautiful pass to Nicholas Otamendi from the corner who made a header in the 71st minute bringing an end to the agony for Argentina.

Venezuela defence and goalie Rafael Romo who was a wall betweeen the Argentinian ball and the back of the net failed to protect his citadel from Nicholas well calculated hit. The Salt lake stadium got their share of their deal was elated with the victory of their team. Messi did justice to the crowd by playing a full 90 mins.

Argentina got a final corner in the 90th minute, but the Venezuelan defence kept them out and following that the blue and white brigade were content to keep playing the ball around.The first match on international grounds under the guidance of their new coach Alejandro Sabella is reassuring for the Argentinians.
