Arvind Kejriwal pardons attacker

aravind-kejriwalLucknow: Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal was attacked and harassed yesterday as he was preparing for a meeting in Lucknow. A youth hurled a slipper at him while he was going to attend a programme in Lucknow as part of their anti-graft campaign, nearly a week after the assault on another colleague Prashant Bhushan.

The youth identified as Jitendra Pathak of Jalaun district hurled the chappal at Kejriwal when he was about to reach the dais at Jhulelal park. He was later caught by volunteers and detained by the police.

“Police must release the attacker. If he hurled the slipper, we have to sit with him and talk peacefully, we shouldn’t attack him back. We should be prepared as attacks will happen. We should be tolerant to anyone who wants to insult us,” said Kejriwal.

Pathak’s uncle Kailash Pathak reacted strongly to the attack and said, “What Jitender did was wrong. He is my nephew but does not stay here in this village. We have not been in touch with him for a long time. I have no idea which political leader he is associated with or which political party he belongs to. He used to work for BJP’s Ramprakash Tripathi. What he did with the Team Anna member was wrong.” There is some ambiguity about the affiliation of the man, Jitendra Pathak, who attacked Kejriwal. He is known to be close to the BJP and has also appeared in many of Congress’s rallies.

BJP termed the attack on Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal as “most unfortunate” saying such acts are against the basic tenets of democracy.

“This attack is most unfortunate. Such acts are against the basic tenets of democracy. But who is behind this? Who all are angry with Kejriwal? All these things should be fully investigated. Ever since he has been raising his voice against corruption, some people have been antagonised,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain
