Babri Masjid anniversary: Security tightened in sensitive areas

babri-masjidNew Delhi: Ahead of the 19th anniversary of the Babri mosque demolition, security at Shabarimala has been tightened. Security has also been tightened in twin towns of Ayodhya, Faizabad, Chennai and other sensitive areas in view. Babri mosque demolition anniversary coincides with Muharram’s 10th day, which is also observed as a day of mourning by a section of Muslims. As part of the precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident, security at Shabarimala sannidhanam and Pamba has been tightened.

Central forces such as the RAF, Kerala Police commandos, intelligence personnel, bomb squad and other special wings of both the Central and State police are on high alert as a precautionary measure. All key installations were given round-the-clock protection. Special security zones were set up to streamline the functioning of the police.

A special police team headed by assistant special officer Vijayakumar made a visit to Kunnar dam, the important water source of Sabarimala temple. Frisking of pilgrims at three points – Pampa, Marakoottam and Nadappandal, were conducted as a precautionary measure. Appealing for peace, the All India Babri Masjid Action Committee (AIBMAC) said no programme which might disturb law and order should be organised on December 6.

Chennai city police commissioner J K Tripathy said, extra precautions were being taken in Chennai in the wake of the arrest of two persons with suspected links to the Indian Mujahideen outfit in suburban Selaiyur last week. A hunt is on for a third person.
