Bomb along Advani’s rath yathra route

advaniChennai: A crude pipe-bomb was recovered from the outskirts of the city along the route which was to be taken by Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani on the second leg of his yatra against corruption. Senior BJP leader escaped an alleged attempt on his life in Madurai. The bomb was detected after a tip off by a villager and defused.

Police sources said the five-ft pipe bomb, connected with wires was recovered under a bridge at Alampatti near Tirumangalam, about 30 Km from here. The bomb is said to have been made of poly vinyl chloride (PVC).  Advani, who has the highest “Z-plus” category security, was scheduled to cross the bridge from Madurai to reach Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district.

Senior police officials and BDDS personnel rushed to the spot and removed the crude bomb. It was taken to the forest area in the proximity and diffused. “The pipe contained 7 kg of high explosive gelatin gel,” said a police official. The leader changed his route and reached Sriviliputhur from where he is set to travel to Shencottah in Tamil Nadu – Kerala border. One person identified as Nehru was detained and was being questioned, they said.
