garbage-freeChennai: New Chennai Mayor, Saidai Duraisamy has decided that clearing the city of garbage is going to be his first order of the day. Minutes after he took the oath of office at Ripon Buildings, Saidai Duraisamy said clearing accumulated garbage would be his top priority. Duraisamy is the second person after MK Stalin to be directly elected the mayor of Chennai, and is also the first mayor of the expanded Greater Chennai, spread across 424sqkm.

Despite heavy rain, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party workers turned up in large numbers at Ripon Buildings as this was the first time a member from their party was becoming the mayor of Chennai. Corporation Commissioner D Karthikayen announced that the election for the deputy mayor would be conducted on October 29 at 9:30am.

Of the 200 new councillors of the Greater Chennai Corporation, 199 turned up for the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday. The lone absentee was KP Shankar who got elected from ward 5 of Tiruvottiyur. Shankar, brother of former fisheries minister KPP Samy, is in jail in connection with the murder of Chelladurai, a fisherman who went missing in 2006.
