Civic poll mania grips TN political parties

election polls in TN Chennai: Political parties in Tamilnadu have started finalising candidates for the local body polls, with the filing of nominations officially starting today. With the ruling AIADMK marching ahead in the race by releasing a string of candidates’ list, the opposition DMK is expected to announce its first list of contestants later today.

Party president M Karunanidhi today was closetted with top leaders of the DMK, including treasurer Stalin, to finalise the names of candidates. ‘A formal announcement will be made this evening,’ said sources.The Tamilnadu Congress Committee, which was recently forced into a situation to face the elections on its own, today started scrutinising the applications filed by the party activists.

The DMDK and the Left parties are yet to announce a decision while the PMK and the VCK have reportedly decided to contest on a common platform.Elections to the local bodies in Tamilnadu will be held in two-phases on 17 and 19 October, State Election Commissioner S S Ayyar said Wednesday late evening.

In the first phase, elections will be held for nine municipal corporations, 60 municipalities, 259 town panchayats and 191 panchayat unions. There was no announcement regarding the Tiruchi Corporation. Sixty five municipalities, 270 town panchayats and 194 panchayat unions will go to the polls in the second phase.
