Clowns and Clouds: theatre-circus performance

circusKozhikode: For the first time in India theatre art amalgamates with circus acrobatics to create  ‘Clowns and Clouds’ –  a performance staged by the students of National School of Drama in collaboration with Grand Circus a professional circus troupe. The show is open for audience at Marine Grounds, Calicut at 7pm.

A total of 26 students from NSD along with 19 circus artistes from grand circus will appear on stage for their maiden show. The performance Clowns and Clouds is an amalgam of four different stories- ‘The Death of a Joker’ ‘Shwa Shwa a Chinese fable, four stories of Panchatantra and extracts from Kalidasa’s Meghadoot.

“The performance is explored by means of circus and theatre conglomeration and narrating independent stories simultaneously creating a juncture,” says Abhilash Pillai, assistant professor, NSD who is the director of the drama performance. The two and half hour performance is part of a research project. The students have been researching the Circus, an urban form with a long history and one that have been revisited and reconsidered the world over. As a part of the project they have worked on different aspects of the form that include popular cultural idioms, acrobatics, clowning, body movement, shadow puppetry, spectacle, masks, and aerial acts.
