Collector abduction:Maoists mediators talks underway

alex-paul-menonRaipur: The Maoist mediators BD Sharma and Professor Hargopal left for Chintalnar to meet Maoist leaders in a chopper provided by the government. One week after the kidnapping of Sukma collector Alex Menon, the first round of talks between the mediators and the Maoists have begun.

The mediators have arrived at a tentative agreement that shall be submitted to the Maoists. “We are going to meet them, we hope to return by evening with some positive news,” said Mr Sharma before leaving.

After that meeting, they are slated to head back to the state capital Raipur to meet with government interlocutors Nirmala Buch and SK Mishra. The meeting in Raipur later today will be the third round of talks between the mediators and the government in an attempt to break the deadlock for the release of the collector.

The Maoists have demanded the release of 17 of their rebels, a halt to the anti-Maoist offensive ‘Operation Green Hunt’ and have asked the government to send back the security forces in Bastar. Earlier, they had demanded the release of eight of their comrades. In another e mail they explained in detail as the motive and reason behind the arrest of the District Collector. They have accused the Collector of murdering a youth and passing it off as a case of suicide. They also accused the police of committing “atrocities” on the people of Sukhma district.

The rebels kidnapped the 32-year-old 2006 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer on April 21 while he was addressing a gathering of farmers in his district.
