Even If dam collapses we can avert crisis: AG

Kerala High court Thiruvananthapuram: The Sate government informed the High court that even if Mullaperiyar dam is destroyed the Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamave dams will be able to retains its water. Advocate general KP Dhandapani stated that the government is taking all steps to reduce the water level in the Idukki dam.  The AG stated that there was no relation between the Mullaperiyar water level and the apprehension among people.

The cause for fear is the age and instability of the dam. According to the AG the fear among people are being catalyzed and blown out of proportion by the media that is sensationalizing the news. If the Cheruthoni shutters are opened the water would flow into the Arabian sea, the AG added.

The High Court had earlier asked an explanation as to the steps employed by the state government to handle the crisis situation . Though the AG answered the questions posed by the High court the court was not satisfied with the response from the government. The AG’s statement have become controversial for it is contradictory to the declared views of the government.
