Fishermen killing: Kerala govt files affidavit in SC

enrica-italian-shipNew Delhi: The Kerala Government filed an affidavit in Supreme Court stating that the state police had right to take a case against the the Italian ship marines who fired at Indian fishermen. As they shot at those in a boat registered in India the case can be taken, the state pointed out in its affidavit.Though the shot was fired from an Italian ship, the victims were in a boat of Indian registration. Hence the Kerala police can take up case against the Italian ship under Sec IV.

Advocate MT George submitted the affidavit on behalf of Kerala government. n the seven page statement it is said that the two persons were shot dead in a boat registered in India. The statement also demanded to submit a guarantee of at least Rs 3 crore for releasing the ship. As per sources, the mention regarding the incident occurring in India waters had been carefully omitted in the affidavit. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had said Kerala will engage a senior lawyer to present the state’s stand in the case pending in the Supreme Court. After a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Advocate General KP Dandapani would be asked to take necessary steps in this regard.
