Formation of cooperative societies to be a Fundamental Right

sharad-pawarNew Delhi:  The Constitution (One Hundred and Eleventh) Bill, 2009 that enshrines the right to form cooperative societies as a fundamental right will be taken up for passage in the Lok Sabha today. The bill also enshrines the right to set up a specialized agency on the lines of the Election Commission to conduct election of the cooperative societies.

The bill moved by agricultural Minister Sharad Pawar was taken up for discussion in Lok Sabha yesterday. According to the minister the objective of the bill was to ensure that the cooperative bodies functions in a democratic, professional, autonomous and economically sound manner.

The bill seeks to widen the scope of Article 19 to include cooperative societies, besides touching upon the Directive principles of the State Policy as well for the purpose.
