Gaddafi’s wife and children flee to Algeria

Libya: Fugitive Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi’s wife and three children fled Libya to neighbouring Algeria. This provides us with strong evidence that the long time leader has lost his grip on the country.

As per a foreign ministry statement Col Gaddafi’s wife Safia, daughter Ayesha and sons Muhammad and Hannibal left Libya early on Monday. Algeria’s UN ambassador said, “they were received on humanitarian grounds”.

The arrival of Col Gaddafi’s wife and three children in Algeria had been reported to the UN and to Libyan rebel authorities, the Algerian foreign ministry said in a statement carried by Algeria’s APS news agency. The Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Mr. Qadhafi’s wife Safia, his sons Hannibal and Mohammed, and his daughter Aisha entered the country across the land border.

It said they had crossed the border between Libya and Algeria at 08:45 local time (07:45 GMT) on Monday.

Mr. Qadhafi’s whereabouts were still unknown and rebels are worried that if he remains in Libya, it will stoke more violence. Rebels also said elite military commander Khamis, one of Mr. Qadhafi’s sons, was probably killed in battle.

Ahmed Jibril, an aide to rebel National Transitional Council head Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, said officials would “demand that Algerian authorities hand them over to Libya to be tried before Libyan courts.”
