Govt – Hazare reach consensus

Anna hazareNew Delhi: After the talks of Team Anna and the chosen interlocutor, Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the impasse on the Lokpal Bill came to an end, with the government conceding to include the Prime Minister within the ambit of the Lokpal Bill. The government is finally willing to include the members of parliament under the bill and to consider Lokpal, instead of CBI, to be the sole agency to investigate corruption.

The two hour long meeting was considered to be fruitful and a constructive. However there is still 3 points of contention between the two sides. A consensous could not be arived at between the two teams on – including the lower bureaucracy under the ambit of the Lokpal, creating a Lokpal for every state and preparing a citizen charter in each government department for time bound delivery of services.

The government representatives urged Team Anna to persuade the anti-corruption crusader to break his fast but the team told the government that unless they gave a written commitment it would be exceedingly difficult to persuade Anna to break his fast.

The team said, “unless the government would table, discuss and pass in this session of Parliament the Jan Lokpal Bill or a Bill that incorporates the principles of the Jan Lokpal Bill,” it would be difficult to convince Mr. Hazare to give up his fast. “If required, the Parliament session should be extended,” they added.
