Govt relented: Hockey players awarded 1.5 lakh each

Indian hockey teamNew Delhi: Sports Minister Ajay Maken has decided to hike the cash award to be awarded to the members of the Indian hockey team. The government has finally decided to pay the players 1.5 lakh per person under the Government Scheme of cash awards. Maken denied the earlier claim that the government did not have sufficient fund to pay the players.

The minister said the government has been giving money to the players through various schemes. Meanwhile the Punjab government has declared to award the players with Rs 25000 per person. The government that the amount was not charity and that the players were receiving what they deserve.

Indian hockey team rejected the meagre, pittance cash reward of Rs 25,000 per person offered to them by the Sports minister after winning the Asian Champions Trophy. The winning hockey national team was offered Rs 25,000 per player by the Sports Minister Ajay Maken during their felicitation ceremony.

The players said that though they were not playing for money, the cash award of 25000 showed the governments negligence towards the sport. Narendra Batra Secretary General of  Hockey India had earlier declared that the federation had no money to give their players. He said,” it should be considered as dad’s gift to his children.”
