Gulf Air flight skids off the runway at Kochi

nedumbaserry plane accidentKochi : The Gulf Air flight GF 270 with 137 passengers and six crew on board, skid off the runway at Nedumbassery airport on Monday, 4:10 am. Seven passengers were injured when a Gulf Air Flight from Bahrain to Kochi deviated from the runway just before landing at the nearby International airport.

One passenger who was seriously injured has been admitted to a nearby hospital and the others were discharged after first aid. Saithmohed (47) from Palakkad who suffered some fractures has been hospitalized.

“The runway has been closed for bigger aircraft following the incident. It would take another 10 hours for the airport to be fully operational”, airport director ACK Nair said. However, smaller ATR aircrafts can land, he added.

Some passengers in panic, jumped down from the aircraft through the emergency door even before the ladder was brought to the flight, airport sources said.

According to sources, the mishap could have occurred due to heavy wind and rain at the time of landing of the aircraft. Director of Civil Aviation has ordered an inquiry into the matter. Desperate attempts are being made to bring the aircraft back onto to the runway. CIAL Air India’s help has been solicited. Only after the ‘disabled aircraft recovery kit’ reaches Kochi can the plane be brought back onto the runway.
