Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami claimed responsibility:Delhi blasts

delhi bomb blast near high courtNew Delhi: Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami has claimed responsibility for the terror bombing outside the Delhi High Court. The Harkat-ul-Jehadi has demanded that the death sentence of Afzal Guru, accused in the 2001 parliament attack, be repealed with immediate effect. Their claim and demand was expressed through an e-mail that was sent from an unknown location.

“We own the responsibility of today’s blast at (the) high court (in) Delhi. Our demand is that Afzal Guru’s death sentence should be repealed immediately else would target major high courts and the Supreme Court of India,” the email read. Guru has been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court after he was convicted for the December 13, 2001 parliament attack.

Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami is a terror group,based in Pakistan and has affiliations in Bangladesh.

“We are taking the e-mail seriously,” National Investigation Agency (NIA) chief S C Sinha told reporters.

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) is assisting in the probe into the explosion outside the Delhi High Court. NIA Director Prakash Mishra told reporters here that “the agency would assist Delhi Police in the investigations.” Personnel of the National Security Guard (NSG) who have also reached the spot would assist in the investigation process, officials said.

Union Home Minister R.K. Singh said the blast was of ‘medium to high intensity’ and created a ‘deep crater’ at the site of explosion at the reception area between Gate No.4 and 5 of Delhi High Court. The home ministry has also confirmed that it was a terror attack adding, ‘it had all the makings of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) set up by a terror group’.

Special Commissioner Dharmendra Kumar told reporters the bomb was apparently kept in a briefcase.”We are investigating how the brief case was placed there It is not a controlled area. There were lots of people,” said Kumar. Delhi police suspects use of potassium nitrate in the bomb.
