HC issues Contempt notice to Modi Govt

modiAhmadabad: A contempt notice has been issued to the Narendra Modi government by the Gujarat High Court for failing to compensate 56 people whose shops were destroyed during the 2002 communal riots of 2002. The high court had ordered the government provide compensation in 2011. However, the Gujarat government has not complied.

The court asked the Modi government to explain why it has still not handed over the money to those affected. Last week, the High Court ordered the government to fund the repair of nearly 600 religious buildings that were targeted during the riots. Mr Modi’s officers had fought a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that asked the state to underwrite the renovation.

The contempt notice has issued on the same day that the metropolitan court in Ahmedabad will decide if the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe report on the Gulbarg Society massacre during the 2002 Gujarat riots should be made public. The court will also take a decision on whether the SIT should submit the pertinent documents before the court.
