Indian hockey team insulted

rajpal-singhNew Delhi: Indian hockey team rejected the meagre cash reward of Rs 25,000 per person offered to them by the Sports minister after winning the Asian Champions Trophy. The winning hockey national team was offered Rs 25,000 per player by the Sports Minister Ajay Maken during their felicitation ceremony.

Indian Hockey skipper Rajpal Singh believes that the prize amount is an insult of Indian Hockey Team. “The feat of beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals of the prestigious event has not been rewarded well. My team is disappointed by the hollow claims of the Sports Minister to revive the national sport in the country. The Sports Minster did not come true to our expectations, the money should be better not just for the motivation of the current crop of players but for the future generations who’d like to take up the national sport,” Rajpal said.

The skipper also added that the Sports federation can take a leaf out of BCCI’s working and awarding of the players to motivate them for better results. Hockey India (HI) came up with an even bigger shocking revelation that they did not have money to give to their players. HI secretary general Narendra Batra, the official said that at present the federation cannot give anything beyond Rs 25,000.

According to sources, the problem between Hockey India and the FIH is the reason why sponsors are not coming onboard yet for the team. Reports had suggested that Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Airtel was interested in sponsoring the team, but took a back seat due to the ongoing tussle between the national and international federation. India had beaten Pakistan 4-2 in the Asian Champions Trophy finals on Sunday in Ordos, China.
