Kadinamkulam schoolbus accident: Cleaner 1st accused

Kadinamkulam bus accidentThiruvananthapuram: The police has reasons to believe that the school van that met with an accident at Kadinamkulam, Chanangara was driven by the cleaner. A case has been registered with cleaner Shibin as the primary accused. The second accused in the case is driver Jefferson.

Three students drowned and 18 children were injured when a school bus carrying 23 students of Jyothinilayam School, Kazhakuttam fell into Parvathy Puthanar canal. The accident occurred at 4pm yesterday.

Before plunging into the canal the bus fell into a sand filled boat. This helped the rescuers to commence the operations immediately. The deceased were identified as Aromal S Nair, Kanishka Santhosh and Ashwin all fourth standard students of the school. Fourteen children have been admitted to the SAT hospital. Of the 14, two children- Krishnapriya and Devika have been admitted in the ICU.

The children admitted at SAT are Sandra(5), Sachu(7), Ancy(10), Akhil(13), Rubeena(14), Sheetal (10),Anith(4),Jayasoorya(4), Sooryagayathri(12),Abhijit(9), Krishna(5) and Blessan(10). Akshay (10) has been admitted to KIMS hospital.

Local people began the rescue operations even before the police and the fire force arrived. 20 students were pulled out in half an hour time. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy along with cabinet colleagues and DGO Jacob Punoose supervised the operations. A six member diving team from the Southern Naval command flew down to aid in the rescue operations.

The CM stated that the government would look into the demand for erecting hand railings along the banks of the canal. The government has also announced compensation for the families of the victims. This is the second accident in the canal in the last eight 8 months.
