Kanimozhi denied bail

kanimozhi-New Delhi: The Special court judge denied bail to Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi and seven others accused in the 2G spectrum case. Kanimozhi who has been in Tihar jail since May 20,2011 for accepting bribes, criminal conspiracy to cheat the exchequer and criminal breach of trust and she will now return to jail. She has been charged with helping former Telecom Minister A Raja, also from her party, of accepting a 214-crore kickback.

The court announced that the trial will begin on November 11, 2011. Judge OP SAni dismissed the bail pleas of all accused in the scam on three accounts. According to him, the three accounts on which the oreder is based are that the”crime committed was a deliberate offence, an economic offence and very serious in nature.” He added that the accused used public money for their personal use.

On the basis of medical papers the illness of Karim Morani is not so high as to categorize his custody as being detrimental of health. Kanimozhi belongs to upper echelons of the society and is also a Member of Parliament. By no stretch of imagination she can be said to be suffering from any discrimination on grounds of being a woman alone. The rights of accused are important but rights of victims and witnesses are of no less value.

Kanimozhi met with her mother, husband and 11-year-old son at the Delhi court this morning, before she was taken inside for the hearing. In court, top leaders of her party like actor-politician Khushboo and TR Baalu were waiting to hear the judge’s decision. Her half-brother MK Stalin is in Delhi too; DMK sources said he was hoping to meet her because the party believed she was likely to get bail today.
