Kejriwal owes IT department 9 lakhs

New Delhi: Income Tax department had slapped a notice on Anna Hazare’s main man Arvind Kejriwal for not paying the IT department his dues that amounts to Rs 9 lakhs last month. The man who rose against the Government seems to be in debt. The notice was served a week before Anna Hazare kicked off his anti-corruption crusade on August 16 at Ramlila Maidan.

Kejriwal who joined Indian Revenue Service in 1995 and worked as Additional Commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi had resigned from service in February 2006. However the department refuses to accept his resignation tendered in 2006 until he clears all his dues.

As per the I-T department he is still a government servant as after being on study leave from November 01, 2000-October 31, 2002, did not return to government service – rules mandate a three year bond after study leave. Thus he owes the department two years’ salary amounting to Rs 3.5 lakhs and an additional 4.16 lakh as interest on that amount. Besides the salary dues, the social activist had also taken a computer loan of Rs 50,000, which he is yet to repay the interest accumulated on this sum amounts to Rs 1 lakh.

Team Anna member Justice Santosh Hegde says the timing seems vindictive.”At a time when he has done so much in the movement of Anna Hazare. The government seems to be taking vindictive steps, it looks to me at the first sight. I think people at large will misundersatnd this. Five yrs back he left his job, he signed a bond and now when amidst all these happenings, they slap him this amount and say come and pay within a week, looks vindictive to me,” said Justice Hegde.

On being asked whether the government will harass every member of Team Anna, Hegde said,”I don’t know, may be so. Such attempts have been going on for a long time, either to denigrate them or to harass them in one way or the other,” he said.

Kejriwal replied to the notice by asserting that he took study leave from 2000 till October 2002 and resumed duty in November 01, 2002. Kejriwal also said that he completed three years in October 1, 2005 and resigned only in February 2006. The noted RTI activist denied that he had violated any norms, while questioning the timing of the notice.
