Kerala Governor M O H Farook passes away

moh-farookhThiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor M O H Farook , 75, passed away at Chennai Apollo hospital last night due to kidney failure. Three times Chief Minister of Puducherry, Farook assumed the charge of Kerala Governor On September 8, last year.

He was admitted at Apollo Hospitals on December 4. Mr Farook was treated for multiple myeloma. He had been on medical leave since then. Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj was holding the additional charge of Kerala.

MOH Farook who succeeded RS Gavai as the Kerala Governor was Kerala’s 19th Governor. Born on September 6, 1937, Mr Farook served as the Speaker of Puducherry Legislative assembly for two terms, from 1964 to 1967 and as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for three terms, from 1967-68, 1969-1974 and 1985 to 1990.

He was the Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia from September 2004 to December 2009. He was elected to the 10th, 11th and 13th Lok Sabha. He headed the governments of both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress. He served as the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism in 1991-92 in the PV Narasimha Rao government.

Kerala government has declared a seven-day mourning. State government offices and educational institutions will remain closed today as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan have expressed their heartfelt condolences.

Farook’s body was brought to Puducherry last night and the burial will take place this evening. He is survived by his son MOHF Shahjahan and daughters F Malika and FYasmin.
