Kerala retail sector on strike

retail sector strike against FDI Kozhikode: Kerala’s traders have begun their day long strike to protest the central government’s decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in the multi-brand retail sector.  Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samity (KVVES) have asked all traders to down the shutters and to consider as a day of mourning. Muslim League has also expressed its solidarity with the protestors.

All traders would organize demonstration marches before the Secretariat and all district headquarters. The traders have declared that they cannot permit 51% FDI in multi-brand retail sector. The KVVES leaders said they have conveyed their concerns over the matter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, urging him to take up the matter with the Centre. Kerala State Barbers union will also call a strike on Tuesday and all shops shall be shut down. KVVES leader T Nazaruddeen, said that they would convene a meeting on December 5, 2011 where discussions would be held to intensify the protest.
