Kerala state budget postponed

maniThiruvananthapuram: State Finance Minister KM Mani said that the Kerala budget shall be presented after the Piravom byelection. However, the date of presentation of budget has not yet been decided. State Finance department forwarded a letter to Election Commission of India seeking permission for the presentation of State budget on March 19. The minister was speaking at a press conference held today. Earlier, it was announced that the budget would be presented on March 9.

As per the constitution it is the duty of the ruling to present the budget before the beginning of  every financial year. The government was forced to postpone the budget as allegations were raised stating that a budget before the elecions would lead to a breach of election code of conduct.

Earlier Deputy opposition leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan stated that he would not allow the government to present the budget before the Piravom elections. According to him if the budget was to be presented on March 9 it would influence the voting pattern of the people.

The Assembly session would begin on March 1 itself. There is no change in the Governor’s address. The Cabinet will meet again and inform the Governor about the latest recommendations, Mani told.
