Kochi Tuskeres terminated from BCCI

kochi tuskersMumbai: Kochi tuskers have been terminated from IPL for non-payment of bank guarantee by the BCCI. The decision was announced at its Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Monday. “Because of the irremediable breach committed by the Kochi franchise, the BCCI has decided to encash the bank guarantee in their possession and also terminate the franchise. There is no chance of their return. We have terminated the franchise because the breach is not capable of being remedied,” Srinivasasn said.

The consortium, which was mired in a bitter ownership dispute after its very inception, defaulted on a Rs. 156 crore annual payment it was to make as bank guarantee despite reported reminders from the IPL authorities. The franchise, which was bought for Rs. 1,550 crore, is supposed to make the yearly payment for the next 10 years.

The team made its debut only last year and was among the laggards in the league. Led by Mahela Jayawardene, the side has also been hitting the headlines due to its owners’ reported desire to shift the team’s base to Ahmedabad. Kochi had faced the prospect of being axed even last year when the BCCI questioned its shareholding but the matter was settled after agreement between the various owners.

The other major decision taken at the annual meeting was the appointment of N Srinivasan as the new President of the board. He is to replace the former President Shankar Manohar. Rajiv Shukla has been appointed as the IPl chairman who is to succeed Chirayu Amin. Meanwhile, Krishnamachari Srikkanth has been reained as the Chairman of the Selectors and Mohinder Amarnath is to join the selction committee from the North Zone while selectors Raja Venkat, Narendra Hirwaniand Surendra Bhave will stay on, sources added.

The other major appointments include Vilasrao Deshmukh as the Media Committee Chairman, Farukh Abdullah as the Marketing Committee Chairman, Jyotiradiya Scindia as Finance Committee Chairman while G Viswanath replaced Amarnath in the Governing Council. India’s embarassing defeat in England has led to the formation of a special committee which includes Amarnath and Anil Kumble among others as its members.

In a reaction to Kochi’s suspension, Shashi Tharoor tweeted, My role was to bring an IPL team to Kerala. Running it was not my responsibility & couldn’t be. What a mess the management made of it!
