Kudankulam protest:MDMK chief Vaiko arrested

vaikoTirunelveli: The Tamil police arrested MDMK General Secretary Mr Vaiko along with more than 350 protesters when they attempted to take out a rally to Kundankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Mr Vaiko held a demonstration at Palayamkotai in Tirunelveli district in support of the anti – Kudankulam agitation.

Around 5000 people had gathered at village today. Meanwhile the fast led by Mr Udaykumar, convener of the anti-kudankulam agitation continues at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district. There are speculations regarding the arrest of Mr Udhayakumar.

People from Idinthakarai and neighboring areas have joined the protest. The villagers who have gathered there want to be court arrested along with Mr Udhayakumar. Mr Udhayakumar is facing charges of sedition and waging war against the country. He is on an indefinite hunger strike in Idinthakarai ever since Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa gave the go-ahead to begin work at the controversial plant earlier this week.

Prohibitory orders, however, remain in force in areas around Kudankulam. Second 144 had been imposed in and around the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant site. The protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant enter the fifth day on Friday. The arrests come amidst the continuous crackdown on protestors by the Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu. The crackdown began last week after the Tamil Nadu Cabinet approved the nuclear plant.
