Lalur strike: K Venu under arrest

k.-venuThrissur: K Venu who has been on an indefinite strike protesting against the Lalur waste problem was arrested by the police at 6.30 this morning. He has been sitting on a hunger strike in front of the Thrissur corporation since February 14. The police were forced to arrest him as his health has been deteriorating and he was in critical stage. The police team lead by DYSP K Thomas was in charge of the arrest. Mr Venu has been shifted to Thrissur District hospital’s critical care unit. The doctors had examined him yesterday.

Meanwhile Venu insists that he shall continue with the strike until the government removes the waste from Lalur. He said that he will continue the hunger strike even in the hospital. De- centralized disposal of waste and the removal of waste from Lalur are some of the demands raised by the protestors. Thrissur corporation is in a fix as they have not yet been able to arrive at a solution to the problem at hand. The corporation is still seeking ways as to the possible methods to be employed to remove the waste from Lalur and the city.

The protest was inaugurated by the famous literary laureates Zachariah. They are seeking a permanent solution to the waste disposal problem. The protesters stated that though the Chief Minister had assured a solution to their problem nothing has been done till today. The site of protest in Lalur has been comparatively peaceful. No fiery speeches or large crowds were found near the pandal. Lalur Samara Samithi chairman T K Hamsa has declared that they would intensify the protest at Lalur.
