LDF protest march turns violent

ldf-protest-marchThiruvananthapuram: The LDF march, protesting against the increase in the retirement age to 56 years, before the collectorate, turned violent. The LDF youth wing activists organized protest marches in Kannur, Kasargode, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The activists and the police clashed. Police lathicharged, used water cannons and hurled tear gas in an attempt to control the violent mob. Several have been injured in the police lathi charge.

The activists attempted to break barricades and forcefully enter the collectorate. At Kollam 5 people were injured in the clash. Even after the police hurled tear gases 15 times the agitators did not disperse, hence the police resorted to lathicharge in Kasargode . The Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala on Monday raised the retirement age of state government employees to 56 years from the existing 55. Finance Minister KM Mani made the announcement in this regard while presenting the state Budget for the current fiscal.
