Metallica organizers arrested, concert cancelled, fans enraged

metallicaNoida: Four officials involved with the organizing of  Metallica’s maiden concert in India have been arrested on charges of cheating. The eagerly awaited mega event has been cancelled due to security reasons. The four people including a senior executive who were arrested belongs to DNA network, the event management company looking after the show.

The Gurgaon police said the operational head of DNA Entertainment Network, Rajesh Chandwani, was among the four people arrested. The other three include Ashok, Savia Faleio and Umesh. They were arrested under sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

Over 25,000 people who had gathered at the Lesiure Valley Park in Gurgaon’s Sector 29 to watch the concert went berserk when they realized that they would not be able to listen to their  ‘gods of rock’ sing their biggest hits from ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ to ‘One’ and ‘Seek and Destroy’. Less than two hours before the heavy metal band was to play, the organisers postponed the concert to 4 pm on Saturday. Disappointed fans tried to vandalise the venue. They broke barriers, climbed onto the stage and tore posters.

The company said, “The band was notified that there was a serious question as to whether the show could proceed with regard to the safety of the concert audience”.

“DNA Networks, and Metallica determined that there was a failure of a security barricade in front of the stage that could not be adequately repaired, they reluctantly announced the postponement of the show until Saturday,” the company said in a release.

“Unfortunately, on such short notice the promoters were unable to secure a permit for a show on Saturday, therefore DNA announced that Metallica would not be able to play in Delhi,” it said.

DNA networks said it will be soon issuing a notification as regards to refunds. 25,000 thousand tickets had been sold for prices ranging from Rs. 1650 to Rs. 2750.“Within the next 24 hours a notification will be issued by DNA Networks regarding the process for full refunds. Metallica is deeply disappointed with this news and will continue to send updates as additional details are determined and confirmed,” it said.

Metallica is scheduled to perform in Bangalore on Sunday.

full statement issued by Metallica:

We arrived in Delhi on Friday very excited and ready to play our first show ever in India at the F1 Rocks concert. However, immediately at the end of our afternoon press conference at a hotel near the venue, we were notified that there was a serious question as to whether the show could proceed with regard to the safety of the concert audience. And our first and foremost concern is always for the safety of you, the fans.

Once we, along with DNA, the promoters of the show, determined that there was a failure of a security barricade in front of the stage that could not be adequately repaired, the promoter reluctantly announced the postponement of the show until Saturday. Unfortunately, on such short notice the promoters were unable to secure a permit for a show on Saturday. Therefore, DNA announced that we would not be able to play in Delhi. Within the next 24 hours a notification will be issued by DNA regarding the process for full refunds.

We are deeply disappointed with this news as we were looking forward to our first experience in India as much as you guys were. Keep watching for updates here as additional details are determined and confirmed.
