MIMS hospital nurses begin indefinite strike

Kozhikode: The nurses at MIMS hospital have initiated an indefinite strike against the management under the leadership of Indian Registered Nurses Association. More than 300 nurses are participating in the strike. Better wage and increase in allowance are some of the demands raised by the nurses. The demands raised are- 15,000 salary for newly appointed nurses with allowances, 1000 rupee increase as per each individuals experience, strict maintenance of patient nurses ratio, increase the number of nursing staff, a minimum of two nurses to be included as representatives to be included in the grievance committee, improvement of facilities at ladies hostel, improving allowance with time, allowances to granted to those nurses working on public holidays,

The strike that was launched today morning was inaugurated by the United Nurses Association president Ahmmed Shah. District president Litto Varghese addressed the gathering. The nurses taking part in the strike said that though they had served a demand notice on March 7 and a strike notice on March 19, the management had failed to address their grievances. Meanwhile the management has stated the nurses strike cannot be justified even as the management had set April 10 as the date for further deliberation and discussion.  On 3 April, 2012 the management and nursing representatives met at the labour office, however they failed to reach any consensus. hence the meeting was postponed to the 10th of this month.

Mr Litto Varghese while speaking to doolnews, justified and defended the strike. He said that they commenced the strike as the management and the nurses had failed to arrive at the consensus even though they had exceeded the deadline mentioned in the notice.  “We did not want the next meeting to also be a pretense like the previous ones,” he said. “The strike shall be organized in such a way that it does not cause any disturbance to the patients. We shall ensure the care of all the patients currently admitted in the hospital,” he added.
