MP’s seek status upgradation

VIP car New Delhi: The Committee of Privileges of the Lok Sabha headed by MP PC Chacko have demanded for a status upgradation of the Members of Parliament in its recommendations that would be tabled in the Lok Sabha. As per the recommendations the MP’s should be on par with the Chief Justices of the High Courts in the Warrant of Precedence and they should be permitted to have red beacons on top of their vehicles.

The committee has also recommended that former Speakers of the Lok Sabha should be placed at number seven in the Warrant of Precedence, making them on par with Union cabinet ministers, former Prime Ministers and Leaders of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Currently the former speakers of the Lok Sabha are not part of the Warrant of Precedence, while the Speaker is placed at number 6 along with the Chief Justice of India, while the Speaker is placed at number 6 along with the Chief Justice of India.

The committee has asked an upgradation of the MP’s from the level of number 21 in the Warrant of Precedence to number 17. At present the MP’s are much below those holding constitutional offices and even bureaucrats. The Committee also took note of “recurrent instances” of protocol violations and discourteous behaviour by government officials while dealing with MPs.

If placed at number 17 of the Warrant of Precedence they would be on par with Chief Justices of High Courts and Chairpersons of CAT, Minorities Commission, National Commission for Scheduled Castes and National Commission of Scheduled Tribes, besides Puisne Judges of High Courts. At number 17, the MPs will be placed above Cabinet ministers of state governments who are placed at number 18.
