Libya: Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds which were inflicted during the attack, Libya’s interim rulers said.”He (Gaddafi) was also hit in his head,” National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters. “There was a lot of firing against his group and he died.”An anti-Gaddafi fighter said Gaddafi had been found hiding in a hole in the ground and had said “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot” to the men who grabbed him. Abdul Hakim Belhaj, a NTC military chief, has confirmed that Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds after being captured near Sirte. Earlier, Jamal abu-Shaalah, a field commander of NTC, told Al Jazeera that the toppled leader had been seized.

Libyan information minister said, “It’s a great victory for the Libyan people.” There are scenes of celebration in Libya.

Libyan fighters said they have taken control of the last holdout of Moammar Gadhafi loyalists in his hometown of Sirte.The council has said it will officially declare Libya liberated when Sirte falls.

Libyan fighters drove the last holdouts of Muammar Qadhafi out of his hometown of Sirte in a few hours of fierce gun battles today, then declared victory over the last major resistance two months after the fall of Tripoli. The ecstatic former rebels celebrated by firing endless rounds into the sky, pumping their guns, knives and even a meat cleaver in the air and singing the national anthem. Some burned the green Qadhafi flag, then stepped on it with their boots.They chanted “Allah akbar,” or “God is great” in Arabic, while one fighter climbed a traffic light pole to unfurl the revolution’s flag, which he first kissed. Discarded military uniforms of Mr. Qadhafi’s fighters littered the streets.

The former autocratic ruler of Libya who assumed power of Libya in 1969 remained as it ruler till 2011. He seized power in a military coup. In 2011 his government was overthrown by a NATO-backed rebel force in a civil war.After seizing power in 1969, he abolished the Libyan constitution of 1951 and imposed laws based on the political ideology he formulated the “Third International Theory” and published “the Green Book”.
