Mullaperiyar: Kambam lathi charge

Kumily-clashKumily: Police resorted to lathi charge to control the Tamil protestors who were protesting against the Mullaperiyar dam issue near Kambam. The march that was initiated towards the Kambamedu check post turned violent. The Tamil Nadu had to resort to lathi charge when the protestors broke the safety barricade.  More than 8000 people participated in an agitation at Adivaram 8kms away from the Kambamedu check post. The protestors hurled stones at the police.

The Idukki Devikulam collector has ordered that a  large police force be deployed at the border to prevent untoward incidents. The police is capable of handling any situation, he said. Meanwhile, several lawyers in Tamil Nadu today staged a demonstration and abstained from Court proceedings on that day to condemn the Kerala Government’s stand to build a new dam in place of the existing Mullaperiyar dam. They burnt Mr Oommen Chandy’s effigy.
