Mullaperiyar: Kerala CM meets PM

Oommen-Chandy-CmNew Delhi: Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi today to discuss the Mullaperiyar row. Mr Oomen Chandy is in a desperate attempt to garner support from the Centre. Only a amicable solution to the problem would bring respite to those living in perpetual fear around the dam. While Kerala ministers keep driving home the point that the 116 year old dam will not hold any longer the Tamil Nadu ministers insist that the leaders are creating a fear psychosis among the people.

I have asked the Prime Minister to examine all the dams that are 100-years-old or more as a policy matter and take action accordingly. We are not opposed to giving water to Tamil Nadu,” Chandy said.”We are not willing to pay with the lives of people. Mullaperiyar dam does not have the ability to withstand tremors anymore,” he added. Kerala MPs have also met Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and have requested a parliamentary delegation to inspect the dam site.

MPs from Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the AIADMK, are also slated to meet the PM over the same issue. Yesterday, Mr Chandy wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, seeking her consent to reduce the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 120 feet keeping in mind that more than 30 lakh peoples lives are at stake. Tamil Nadu, however, has been demanding that the dam’s water level be increased to meet its growing irrigation needs. Ms Jayalalithaa even took the Kerala government to Supreme Court.
