Mullaperiyar: Vaiko arrested

VaikoIdukki: MDMK Chief Vaiko and Tamil leader Nedumaran were arrested today for breaking the curfew and enforcing a road and economic blockade over the Mullaperiyar issue. He was arrested while he was on his way to the protest from Utharapalam. The MDMK leaders had planned to block all roads leading to Kerala in Tamil Nadu’s border districts of Theni, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. Vaiko was detained while leading the protest in Theni.

MDMK leader Vaiko has demanded an increase in water level 142 and has asked people of Kerala to refrain from indulging in atrocities against people of Tamil Nadu. The protestors had warned of blocking roads at 13 places at  Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Thirunalveli, and Thiruchirapalli districts. Kumily, Kambam, Mayoor check posts have been shut down. At these places the protest is continuing in a very peaceful manner.

Heavy police protection has been deployed in these sensitive regions as a precautionary measure. All movement of traffic has been completely curtailed.
