Mullaperiyar water to be reduced immediately

mullaperiyar-damThiruvananthapuram: After an all part meeting held at Thiruvananthapuram the ministers have arrived at the conclusion that the Mullaperiyar dam ‘s water level should be reduced to 120 feet urgently to reduce the possibility of the dam failure. Water Resources Minister PJ Joseph and Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan would fly to New Delhi seeking Centres intervention and will submit the State’s proposal on the 116 year old dam.

The dam currently holds 15 TMC of water that would have to be reduced to 120 feet so that the volume will go down to 7 TMC. “This is a short term measure and all actions should be done urgently,” Mr Joseph said. He reassured that there would be sufficient water for irrigation in Tamil Nadu. If a stste government plan works out, the Mullaperiyar region will soon have electronic eyes keeping a watch on the seismic activities of the area. By December, a laboratory will come up under the aegis of the Hazared, vulnerability and risk assessment Cell.

The Kerala State Electricity Board will install a network of digital seismographs. Three crore has been handed over to the power utility. Mock evacuation drills will be staged in schools.
