Mullaperiyar:Chidambaram takes stand against Kerala

chidambaramNew Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram controversial statements on the Mullaperiyar dam has come as a shock. Surprisingly, Chidambaram stated that the Mullaperiyar dam which was built 116 years ago was for the people of Tamil Nadu. He claimed that the dam was perfectly safe and the politicians of Kerala was creating an uproar keeping the Piravom elections in mind. According to him the matter shall settle down after the Piravom election.

The Home Minister who was also an advocate said that he strongly believes that Supreme Court verdict shall be in favour of Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court committe would probably give its views on the Mullaperiyar issue only in February. Chidambaram’s views have received strong criticism from all political quarters in Kerala.

Kerala MP PT Thomas has demanded an apology from the Home Minister. Food and Public Distribution Minister KV Thomas opined that  such a statement is verydisheartening and regrettable. According to him Kerala and Tamil Nadu always shared a very symbiotic and peaceful relation. “Such proclamations by the minister can be detrimental for the well being of both the states. This statement is very difficult to accept. Such a comment is very unbecoming of a home minister,” he added.

According to Water resources Minister PJ Joseph  said that Chidambaram must resign from the post of Home Minister and that the Home minister of a country has turned a blind eye to the threat to the life of its citizens. The statement of the Home Minister is being viewed as very immature statement.
