Nalini meets Murugan

Chennai: Nalini Sriharan, the life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, met her husband Murugan after a period of one year at the Vellore prison. This is Nalini’s first meeting with Murugan after the President rejected his mercy plea in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Nalini has spent 20 years in prison for her role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Murugan and Nalini were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court, along with two other people, in 1999. Nalini’s sentence was commuted after an intervention by Mr Gandhi’s wife, Sonia, who is the president of the Congress party. Mrs Gandhi stepped in after Nalini delivered a baby girl in jail.

Nalini had been shifted from Chennai jail to the high security Vellore Prison. Nalini’s husband and death row convict, Murugan was  also in the same prison. Nalini, who was shifted to the Puzhal prison in Chennai last year,  following her complaint of harassment by authorities, was moved back to the Vellore Prison on September 7, 2011.

The Madras High Court had ordered a stay on the hanging of Murugan alias Sriharan, Santhan and Perarivalan alias Arivu convicted for Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination for another eight weeks on August 30, giving them a brief reprieve. Murugan and the other two convicts – Santhan and Perarivalan – were scheduled to be hanged on September 9. Their mercy petitions, filed 11 years ago asking for their sentence to be commuted to life in prison, were rejected by President Pratibha Patil last month.
