Niger, Saadi Gaddafi’s new home

Saadi GaddafiLibya: Gaddafi’s son Saadi Gaddafi has fled and sought exile in neighboring Niger. A convoy of eight or nine vehicles was stopped while passing through the desert that separates the two countries by Niger authorities and they found that Gaddafi’s son was on board the convoy.

The report has been confirmed by Marou Adamou, Niger’s government spokesman.”At this moment the convoy is en route to Agadez [northern Niger]. The convoy could arrive in Niamey [the capital] between now and tomorrow,” Adamou said. Saadi and his companions were being allowed into Niger on humanitarian grounds. At the beginning of September, Saadi Gaddafi made contact with the interim authorities, offering to negotiate an end to fighting in Libya but nothing came of the offer.

Saadi Gaddafi, 38, the third of Gaddafi’s seven sons, is a former footballer who had a very brief career in Italy, and he ran the Libyan Football Federation after being national team captain. Since retiring from football, in 2004, he has become involved in the film industry, apparently investing $100m in a film fund. He joined the army, where he led an elite unit.
