Office of Profit: Sebastian Paul demands refrain from signing ordinance

sebastian-paulThiruvananthapuram: Dr Sebastian Paul has written a letter to the Kerala State Governor asking him to refrain from signing the ordinance introduced by the State Government to protect the State Opposition Leader VS Achuthananthan and the Chief Whip PC George from the Office of profit clause.

He pointed out that an attempt to introduce an ordinance when several complaints were lodged against Government Chief Whip PC George as Member of the Legislative Assembly as the he holds office of profit under the State government. The complaints against PC George are being looked into by the Election Commission. Even before the Election Commission has arrived at a decision regarding the complaint the government is attempting bring into force an ordinance which should not be allowed, he said. The government is attempting to overcome the given crisis through legislative amendments he pointed out.

Earlier, Sebastian Paul had send a petition to the Governor stating that the Chief whip wwas holding an office of profit and that immediate action must be taken against him.

The cabinet was to promulgate an ordinance to protect the State Opposition Leader VS Achuthananthan and the Chief Whip PC George from the Office of profit clause, Chief Minister Ommen Chandy has said earlier. This letter by Sebastian Paul is in relation to Chief Minister’s claim.

Such a protection is already available to ministers, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, The CM had said. The new legislation was to extend the protection to the Opposition leader and the Chief Whip, after the weekly cabinet meeting. The ordinance would be introduced with retrospective effect.
