Palmolein case: SC rejects Alphon’s plea

supreme-court-nwNew Delhi: The Supreme court rejected the petition filed by Mr Alphons Kannanthanam against Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in connection with the palmolein case. The bench that looked into the case comprised of Aftar Alam and Ranjana Desai. Alphons Kannanthanam appeared in court and presented his case.

In his petition he has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case that shall be under the supervision of the apex court. He has asked the court to handle the case in the similar manner in which the 2 G spectrum case has been handled. Mr Kannanthanam was the Civil Cooperation Director while the Pamolein deal was underway. ” It would not make sense if the case is inquired by the Vigilance Commission especially when Mr Oommen Chandy himself is the Chief Minister,” he said. He has asked the court to establish a special investigation team under the leadership of a retired IPS officer.

Mr Kannanthanam had earlier approached the High Court with these requests but his petition was rejected by the High Court. The case related to loss to the tune of Rs 2.32 core allegedly caused to the exchequer by import of palmolein in 1991-1992 when late Congress leader K Karunakaran was the chief minister and PJ Thomas, the Food Secretary and a member of the Board of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation.
