Partial rollback in rail fares

mukul-royNew Delhi: Newly appointed Railway Minister Mukul Roy has announced a partial rollback in some of the rail fares that were announced last week in the Rail Budget. The hike in rail passenger fares for second class suburban and non-suburban, Sleeper, AC Chair Car and AC 3-tier were rolled back. He said he considered it a “huge drain” on the pocket of masses.

However, the increase of 15 paise per km and 30 paise per km respectively in passenger fares in AC 2-tier and AC-I shall be retained. “The proposal to increase (fares) will impact the common man,” Roy said. “I intend to give relief by not increasing fares in any of these classes,” he said. Roy also put on hold Trivedi’s proposal of setting up a committee to examine whether there should be an independent tariff regulatory authority. He scrapped Trivedi’s proposal to expand the Railway Board.
