Patil to inaugrate Presidents Trophy Boat Race today

president prathiba patilKollam: President Pratibha Patil is to inaugurate the President’s Trophy boat race(PTBR) at Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam today. President Patil who commenced her three day visit of Kerala on Monday will attend the centenary celebrations of Kottayam Arch Diocese after which she will witness the finals of the president’s trophy boat race from 4.30 to 5 30 pm.

The president will see 16 snake boats race over a 1,200 metre expanse for the trophy and prize money of Rs.100, 000. The first runner up will be awarded a cash prize of  Rs.75, 000 and the second runner up will get Rs.50, 000. Located 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the boating venue has achieved the distinction of being the only regatta in the country in the president’s name.

“All preparations are in place for the first edition of the President’s trophy boat race at Ashtamudi Lake here in the presence of the president”, said the organizing officials.

The President who arrived at the Asramam helipad at 5.15 p.m yesterday, was welcomed by Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishanan at the helipad. Ministers Shibu Baby John and GaneshKumar, N Peethambara Kurup MP, Mayor, District Collector and City Police Commissioner were aslo present. A 41-member team, including President’s husband Devi Singh Shekhavat, officials and mediapersons accompanied the President.

On Wednesday, the President will leave for Thiruvananthapuram in helicopter. She will inaugurate the IGNOU centre in Thiruvananthapuram.
