Pillai release: VS Achuthanadan to submit petition before SC

vs-achuthanandanNew Delhi: Supreme Court would look into the UDF order that has led to the release of the former Minister R Balakrishnan Pillai, who was convicted by the apex court in the Idamalayar graft case. Supreme Court today informed Opposition party leader VS Achuthanandan’s advocate to submit a petition against Pillai as per government procedure.

Once the petition is submitted the apex court would verify whether there has been any breach of law while reducing the term of Balakrishnan Pillai. V S would not have to seek special permission for submitting the petition, the Supreme Court stated. The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice V S Chauhan and Sadashivam that had convicted the Minister Balakrishnan Pillai gave the instructions.

An early release can be earned through good behaviour. However, Balakrishnan Pillai has been punished for breaking jail rules. VS in his petition pointed out that several benefits were granted to him that is generally denied to any convict facing rigorous jail term.  The petition would be submitted today afternoon.
