Piravom election preponed

election-machine, piravom election Thiruvananthapuram: The Piravom by-poll Assembly election has been preponed by a day to March 17 from March 18. Both the UDF and LDF have been demanding the change in the poll date. The Election Commission has issued notification. There was a consensus among major political parties in this regard.

The EC had asked the state CEO Nalini Netto to convene a meeting of representatives of political parties based on a written request by the UDF to change the polling date. The CEO appraised the EC. The EC in turn asked the state government whether it was ready to postpone the SSLC/HSS exams that were scheduled for March 17. The state government in turn postponed the exams to March 26.

The LDF had earlier said that it was not in favour of postponing the poll from March 18. The BJP, however said that it had no qualms in choosing any day for the elections. The Piravom assembly seat fell vacant after the death of Kerala Congress leader TM Jacob. According to political observers, if the UDF fails to retain Piravom, it could shake the government.
